Funhouse Rudy head stuck and jaw not moving

★ Resolved

Rudy's head on my Funhouse has stopped moving entirely. The jaw doesn't open or close, and the head doesn't turn side to side. The eyes still seem to blink (they're controlled by the flasher lamps), but all the mechanical head movement is dead. Rudy's voice callouts still play fine through the speakers.

I looked under the playfield and the motor and mechanism seem physically intact — nothing is obviously broken or disconnected. I tried running the solenoid/motor test from the menu and nothing happens when the Rudy head tests come up.

This happened suddenly — one day everything worked, the next day Rudy was frozen. The rest of the game plays perfectly. Is this a motor issue or a driver board problem?

Rudy's head mechanism in Funhouse is driven by a small DC motor with a gear assembly for jaw movement and head rotation, controlled through the driver board. Since the motor doesn't respond at all during diagnostic testing, you need to trace the problem from the driver board out to the motor.

Start at the driver board — locate the transistor and associated driver circuit for the Rudy motor (check the Funhouse manual for the specific transistor location, typically a TIP102 Darlington pair). Use a multimeter to check if the transistor is getting a signal when you run the motor test. If the transistor is open (blown), replace it — TIP102 transistors are available at Marco Specialties for just a couple dollars. Also check the associated diode and resistor in that driver circuit. If the driver circuit checks out, follow the wiring from the driver board connector to the motor — look for a broken wire or a disconnected plug, especially at the junction where the wiring passes through the playfield pivot area, as wires can fatigue and break from repeated flexing.

If the driver circuit and wiring are good, the motor itself may have failed. Test it by applying 12V directly to the motor leads (briefly) to see if it spins. If the motor is dead, replacement Rudy head motors can be found at Pinball Life. While you have the head assembly accessible, clean and re-grease the gear mechanism — dried-out grease can cause binding that burns out the motor or blows the driver transistor. Also inspect the gears for any cracked or stripped teeth, which is common on machines with high play counts.
